How Do I Maintain My Gun Cabinet in the Summer Heat?

May 06, 2025

Summer heat and humidity can definitely pose a risk to firearms stored in a gun cabinet, potentially leading to rust and corrosion. Here's how you can maintain your gun cabinet and protect your firearms during the warmer months.

Maintaining Gun Cabinets in the Summer Heat

1. Control Humidity Inside the Cabinet:

Dehumidifiers: This is your first line of defense.

Electric Rod Dehumidifiers (e.g., GoldenRod, PEET): These plug into an outlet and gently warm the air inside the cabinet, which lowers the relative humidity and prevents condensation. They are effective for continuous humidity control.

Desiccant Dehumidifiers (e.g., Silica Gel Packs, Rechargeable Canisters): These absorb moisture from the air.

Silica Gel Packs/Beads: These are cost-effective for smaller cabinets. Some types can be recharged by heating them in an oven or microwave. Look for color-indicating gels that show when they need to be recharged or replaced.

Rechargeable Desiccant Canisters: These are often more robust and can cover larger spaces than small packs. They typically have an indicator to show when they are saturated and need to be plugged in to dry out.

Humidity Monitor (Hygrometer): Place a hygrometer inside your gun cabinet to keep track of the humidity level. Ideally, you want to maintain a relative humidity between 40% and 50%. The NRA recommends between 30% and 50%.

2. Maintain Consistent Temperature:

Location of the Cabinet: If possible, place your gun cabinet in a cool, dry area of your home that experiences relatively stable temperatures. Avoid areas prone to significant temperature fluctuations, like garages or attics, especially if they aren't climate-controlled.

Avoid Direct Sunlight: Direct sunlight can heat the cabinet and its contents, potentially leading to condensation when temperatures fluctuate.

3. Proper Firearm Care:

Clean Regularly: Even if your firearms aren't used frequently, clean them regularly to remove dust, fingerprints (which contain corrosive salts), and any existing moisture.

Lubricate Properly: Apply a thin coat of quality gun oil to all metal surfaces. In warmer weather, consider using a lubricant designed for higher temperatures as some lubricants can become too thin in the heat.

Wipe Down After Handling: After handling your firearms, wipe them down with a clean, lint-free cloth, especially if your hands are sweaty.

4. Cabinet Maintenance:

Ensure Good Airflow (if possible): While a tightly sealed cabinet is good for security, some minimal airflow can help prevent moisture buildup. However, prioritize humidity control measures.

Inspect the Interior: Periodically check the interior of your gun cabinet for any signs of moisture, mold, or mildew.

5. Ammunition Storage:

Store ammunition in a cool, dry place, ideally separate from your firearms. High heat and humidity can degrade gunpowder and primers. Inspect your ammo for any signs of corrosion or damage before use.

Things to Avoid:

Storing Firearms in Cases Inside the Cabinet: Gun cases, especially those with foam or sheepskin linings, can trap moisture against the firearm, increasing the risk of rust. If you must store them in cases, take them out periodically to air them and the firearms.

Using Certain Desiccants in Direct Contact with Firearms: Some desiccants, like calcium chloride (found in products like DampRid), can turn into a corrosive liquid as they absorb moisture, which can damage your firearms if they come into direct contact. Silica gel is a safer option.

By implementing these strategies, you can effectively maintain your gun cabinet and protect your valuable firearms from the damaging effects of summer heat and humidity.
